Bryan Hitch's detailed artwork grounded the fantastical elements in a believable, dangerous world. His cinematic panel layouts mimicked camera angles found in Hollywood action films, creating a visual style that influenced future adaptations like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series stripped classic archetypes of their mysticism to fit a post-9/11 geopolitical landscape, placing gods like Thor in friction with men like Iron Man within a strict bureaucratic hierarchy.
