The Salty Koharu Has a Soft Spot for Me
"Shiotaiō no Satō-san ga Ore ni Dake Amai"
Kazami Sawatari
Overview
What starts as a simple web serial on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in June 2019 quickly evolved into a full-blown publishing sensation under Shogakukan's Gagaga Bunko imprint. Kazami Sawatari penned the original story while artist Achiki brought the characters to life with distinct visuals that captured the awkward tension of high school romance. The first physical volume hit shelves on December 18, 2019, kicking off a run that would eventually grow to twelve main books and a short story collection by early 2026.
The narrative focuses on two students trapped in a cycle of misunderstanding: the female lead known as Satō Koharu or "Satō-san" in marketing materials, who acts icy toward everyone except her crush, and the male protagonist who secretly loves her back but thinks his feelings are unrequited. This setup creates a comedy of errors where both characters hide their true emotions behind social anxiety and fear of rejection. The series explores how public personas often mask private vulnerability as these two navigate their shared loneliness without realizing they are already in love.
Expansion into other media formats followed rapidly after the novel's success. Kaya Tetsuyama adapted the story into a manga that began serialization on MangaONE and Ura Sunday in May 2020, compiling ten tankōbon volumes by March 2026. Tezuka Productions then picked up the rights for a television anime adaptation that premiered on October 6, 2026, bringing the animated version of this coming-of-age romantic comedy to a wider audience.
