The Case Files of Biblia Bookstore
En Mikami
Overview
En Mikami and Hagu Koshijima launched The Case Files of Biblia Bookstore in March 2011 through ASCII Media Works. This twelve-volume light novel series follows Shoko Shibata, a young woman with an unusual fear of fire who runs her grandfather's antiquarian bookshop. She possesses an encyclopedic memory for rare books, which helps her solve the mysterious stories hidden within old volumes brought in by customers. Each case reveals a piece of personal history, often involving lost letters or forgotten heirlooms that connect past events to present lives.
Shoko struggles with social anxiety and pyrophobia stemming from a childhood trauma where she could not save her mother from a fire. Her part-time employee Daikichi Kanbe eventually becomes her partner as they navigate both the shop's mysteries and their own developing relationship. The narrative structure relies on episodic storytelling rather than a single continuous plot, allowing each volume to explore different literary themes and emotional resolutions.
Media Works Bunko published the original Japanese text, with translations appearing in Italian, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, and Chinese. The series gained traction for its blend of detective fiction and slice-of-life elements, highlighting how physical books can preserve human memories across generations.
