Soul Eater

Atsushi Ōkubo's Soul Eater throws readers into the bizarre world of the Death Weapon Meister Academy, where students train to turn human-shaped weapons into ultimate tools for the grim reaper. The story follows three teams: each pairs a meister with a weapon partner who can shift between human and blade form. Their goal is to collect 99 evil human souls and one witch soul, in that exact order, so the weapon can become a Death Scythe worthy of Shinigami himself. But if they mess up the order, they have to start from scratch. It is a high-stakes, darkly comedic premise that blends action, horror, and buddy dynamics.

Ōkubo launched the series after three one-shots in 2003, then serialized it in Square Enix's Monthly Shōnen Gangan from May 2004 to August 2013. The 25 collected volumes run about 200 pages each, totaling over 5,000 pages of manga. The property exploded into a 51-episode anime by Bones in 2008, plus video games, an art book, and a spin-off called Soul Eater Not! Yen Press brought the manga to North America in 2009, while Funimation (now Crunchyroll) handled the anime dub. By February 2022, the manga had 20.4 million copies in circulation.

Critics praise its Gothic visual style, often compared to Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, and its energetic fight sequences. However, some readers find the fanservice heavy and the shōnen tropes familiar. Still, Soul Eater stands out for its inventive weapon characters and a world where death is literally a headmaster with a pumpkin-shaped head.[edit]
