Secret Wars
"Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars"
Jim Shooter
Overview
The Beyonder, a cosmic entity of incomprehensible power residing in the Beyond-Realm, becomes curious about human desire. He transports Earth's greatest heroes and villains to Battleworld, a patchwork planet constructed from fragments of various worlds including New York City and the Savage Land. The combatants split into two factions: the Heroes featuring the Avengers, X-Men, Spider-Man, the Hulk, and the Fantastic Four versus the Villains led by Doctor Doom alongside Magneto and Ultron. The Beyonder declares that the victors will receive any single wish granted.
Jim Shooter wrote the series while serving as Marvel's Editor-in-Chief, a role that allowed him to assemble characters from disparate titles without breaking continuity. Mike Zeck handled the pencils and painted all twelve covers, with inks provided by John Beatty and Bob Layton. Christie Scheele colored the issues while Joe Rosen managed lettering. The project served as a direct tie-in to a new line of Mattel action figures, establishing an early template for corporate cross-promotion in comics.
Commercial performance exceeded expectations with the first issue selling approximately 500,000 copies and subsequent runs maintaining sales above 250,000 each. This made it the best-selling comic book series in 25 years at the time of release. Critical reception initially remained mixed to negative, with some viewing the story as a transparent marketing ploy rather than a compelling narrative. Over decades, however, historians have re-evaluated the work as a foundational blueprint for future crossover events like Infinity Gauntlet and Civil War.
