    Overview

Ribon launched in August 1955 as a monthly magazine for young girls, and Shueisha still releases it on the third of every month. This publication stands alongside rivals like Nakayoshi and Ciao as a major force in shōjo manga history. Since 1978, the magazine has moved more than 590 million copies, proving its lasting appeal to readers. Circulation hit a high of 2.3 million in 1994 before slowly declining to roughly 274,000 by 2009. The brand grew so successful that it spawned several spin-offs over the decades, including Bessatsu Ribon, Ribon Comic, and Ribon Original. These sister publications helped expand the universe of stories available to fans while keeping the core magazine fresh.
