Red Riding Hood: A Detective Story

Aito Aoyagi crafted a fresh take on the classic fairy tale with Red Riding Hood: A Detective Story, originally titled Akazukin, Tabi no Tochū de Shitai to Deau. This Japanese novel series launched in August 2020 through Futabasha and has grown to four volumes as of July 2025. The story blends mystery with fantasy, following a young woman named Red who navigates a world where the familiar woods hide dark secrets and actual corpses rather than just wolves. Readers encounter a blend of suspenseful investigation and character-driven drama that reimagines the original tale for modern audiences. The narrative found success beyond print, spawning several adaptations. Kanoka Tana illustrated a manga version that started in Monthly Action magazine in January 2023. When that publication ended its run in February 2024, the comic moved to the Web Comic Action site, continuing until May 2025. Netflix released a live-action film called Once Upon a Crime in September 2023, bringing the story to a global audience. Fans also have an anime television series produced by Benten Film waiting to premiere in January 2027.[edit]
