Re:Zero

Re:Zero follows Subaru Natsuki, a hikikomori teenager who is suddenly transported from a convenience store to a fantasy world. He discovers he has a unique ability called Return by Death, which sends him back in time to a previous checkpoint every time he dies. Subaru cannot tell anyone about this power, and the repeated trauma of dying becomes a central challenge. He must use his ability to save the people he befriends, especially Emilia, a half-elf candidate for the royal throne, while navigating complex political conflicts and magical systems.

The series began as a web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2012 and was later published as a light novel by Media Factory under MF Bunko J, with the first volume released on January 24, 2014. As of 2025, 44 main volumes have been published, along with six side story volumes and thirteen short story collections. The English edition is handled by Yen Press, with other international publishers including Yongsang Publishing Media (Korea), Chingwin Publishing Group (Taiwan), and Editorial Planeta (Spain).

Re:Zero is a dark fantasy isekai that deconstructs genre tropes by emphasizing consequence and psychological depth over wish-fulfillment. The protagonist is not overpowered and must earn trust through repeated failure and sacrifice. The series has been widely praised for its character development, world-building, and exploration of trauma, self-worth, and relationships. It won Best Ongoing Series at the 2017–2018 Crunchyroll Anime Awards and had over 13 million copies in circulation by March 2023.[edit]
