Prison School

Akira Hiramoto's Prison School ran in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine from February 7, 2011, to December 25, 2017, collected into 28 tankobon volumes. The story takes place at Hachimitsu Private Academy in Tokyo's Nerima Ward, a formerly all-girls school that just started admitting male students. Five boys, Kiyoshi, Gakuto, Shingo, Joe, and Andre, enroll expecting a paradise of female classmates. Instead, after getting caught peeping into the girls' bath, they are sentenced to one month in the school's underground prison, run by the stern Mari Kurihara and the merciless vice-president Meiko Shiraki. The series follows their attempts to survive brutal punishments, execute elaborate escape plans, and navigate absurd sexual humiliation, all while a secret romance grows between Kiyoshi and the quiet student council member Hana Midorikawa. Hiramoto's art is noted for detailed character expressions and dynamic layouts that balance grotesque humor with genuine tension. The manga won the 37th Kodansha Manga Award in the general category in 2013 and had over 13 million copies in circulation by March 2018. A 12-episode anime adaptation by J.C. Staff aired in 2015, along with a live-action drama and a stage play.
