Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan

Rikuo Nura is a 13-year-old middle school student living in modern-day Ukiyo-e Town. By day, he wears glasses and tries to blend in with his classmates. By night, his yokai blood awakens, turning him into a powerful leader with flowing white hair. He is the grandson of Nurarihyon, the supreme commander of the Nura Clan, and is destined to become the Third Heir. Rikuo initially rejects this fate, but when rival factions like the 88 Demons of Shikoku threaten his human friends, he must embrace his dual heritage. With loyal retainers such as the Yuki-onna Tsurara, the swordsman Aotabo, and the strategist Kurotabo, Rikuo sets out to unite the Hyakki Yakō and protect both the human and yokai worlds.

The manga was serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump from March 10, 2008 to June 25, 2012, then moved to Jump Next! from August to December 2012. Its 25 tankobon volumes were collected and published by Shueisha. In North America, Viz Media released the English translation under its Shonen Jump imprint between February 2011 and February 2015. The series has sold over 13 million copies worldwide as of April 2023.

Hiroshi Shiibashi, the creator, had previously worked as an assistant to other manga artists before launching this, his first major serialized work. The series draws heavily on Japanese folklore, introducing a wide array of traditional yokai creatures. A character data book titled Nurarihyon no Mago: Secret Ayakashi Notes was released in July 2010. The manga also spawned a 24-episode anime adaptation by Studio Deen in 2010, followed by a second 24-episode season in 2011, a light novel, and a video game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.[edit]
