Normal People

Sally Rooney's second novel, Normal People, traces the tangled relationship between Marianne and Connell from their final year of secondary school in a small Irish town through their university years at Trinity College Dublin. First published by Faber & Faber on 30 August 2018, the 273-page book quickly became a bestseller in the United States, selling nearly 64,000 hardcover copies in its first four months. It also found a large audience in China, where its coming-of-age story resonated with younger readers. The novel's spare, dialogue-driven prose and sharp insight into class dynamics and intimacy earned it a spot on many critics' lists of the best books of the 2010s. A television adaptation, also titled Normal People, aired on BBC Three and Hulu in April 2020, earning critical acclaim and an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Limited Series.

Marianne is an odd, wealthy, and isolated teenager; Connell is a popular, quiet boy whose mother cleans Marianne's house. They begin a secret physical relationship that Connell insists on hiding from their peers. At Trinity, their social positions invert: Marianne finds a confident intellectual circle, while Connell struggles with class alienation and depression. The novel jumps through short, time-stamped chapters, showing how they repeatedly come together and drift apart, each time failing to communicate their vulnerabilities. Rooney explores power, shame, and the question of what it means to be normal with a minimalist style that some critics found repetitive but most praised as psychologically precise.

The book won the Costa Novel Award and was shortlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction and the Dylan Thomas Prize. It has been translated into over 40 languages and sold millions of copies worldwide. The television adaptation, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal, became a cultural phenomenon, boosting sales and sparking the so-called Normal People effect on fashion and music.
