This fantasy world enforces the Ten Pledges, a set of absolute laws banning violence, murder, and theft, forcing all conflicts to be settled through games. Humanity, labeled Imanity, faces extinction as the weakest race, prompting the siblings to strategize their way toward uniting the disparate races and eventually dethroning the God of Games.

Yū Kamiya wrote the light novel series illustrated by his wife Mashiro Hiiragi, with the first volume arriving on April 25, 2012, under Media Factory's MF Bunko J imprint. The narrative blends high-stakes game theory with psychological drama, exploring themes of trust and the nature of reality. By May 2017, the series had sold over three million copies in Japan, securing a spot among the top thirty best-selling light novels of the decade.

English localization is managed by Yen Press, translating the text while Richard Tobin serves as the primary translator. The franchise expanded into multiple media formats including a manga adaptation serialized in Monthly Comic Alive and a 2014 anime television series produced by Madhouse. A prequel film titled No Game No Life: Zero premiered in July 2017, depicting events six thousand years prior to the main timeline.
