    Overview

Takashi Natsume has carried a lonely secret since he was small: the ability to see spirits that remain invisible to everyone else. This gift isolated him during his childhood, leading to years of misunderstanding before he found solace in inheriting the Book of Friends from his grandmother Reiko. The notebook holds the names of yōkai she defeated and bound to her service over decades. Instead of using the book as a tool for command, Takashi chooses to return each name to its owner, freeing the spirits one by one. His journey unfolds through quiet encounters where he helps these creatures resolve lingering regrets or fears, often discovering that the demons possess more humanity than the people around them.

Yuki Midorikawa launched this series in Hakusensha's LaLa DX magazine in June 2003. The serialization moved to the main LaLa publication in July 2007 and concluded in April 2026 after 33 collected volumes. Viz Media brought the English translation to North America starting in January 2010 under their VIZ Signature imprint. The narrative blends slice-of-life drama with supernatural elements, focusing on themes of loneliness, connection, and the passage of time rather than high-stakes battles. A small cat-like spirit named Madara, known as Nyanko-sensei, accompanies Takashi and agrees to protect him while waiting for the day he can reclaim the book.

The franchise expanded beyond print with radio dramas and multiple anime seasons produced by Brain's Base and later Shuka. Films like Natsume's Book of Friends: The Waking Rock and the Strange Visitor appeared in 2018 and 2021. By September 2023, sales exceeded 16 million copies worldwide. A major summer pop-up event took place in Kumamoto, Japan, in 2026, marking continued engagement with the material.
