Master Keaton

Taichi Hiraga-Keaton walks a line between the dusty archives of archaeology and the dangerous front lines of insurance fraud. He holds a Ph.D. in his field yet spends his days as an investigator for Lloyd's of London, traveling to remote corners of the globe to solve suspicious deaths. This half-Japanese, half-British protagonist brings a unique toolkit to every case: academic knowledge of ancient civilizations paired with lethal training from the British Special Air Service.

The narrative unfolds through self-contained episodes rather than a single continuous plot. Each story places Keaton in a new environment where he must rely on deduction and survival skills to untangle mysteries involving colonial history, war trauma, or corporate greed. Unlike action-heavy series that depend on superhuman feats, the tension here comes from his calm demeanor and the quiet weight of historical truths surfacing in modern conflicts.

Naoki Urasawa provided the realistic artwork while Hokusei Katsushika wrote the original scripts alongside Takashi Nagasaki. The team serialized the work in Shogakukan's Big Comic Original magazine from 1988 until 1994. After collecting 144 chapters into 18 volumes, the series found a massive audience in Japan with sales exceeding 20 million copies by 2014. Viz Media eventually brought the English translation to North America, releasing the first volume in December 2014. [edit]
