Magical Explorer: Reborn as a Side Character in a Fantasy Dating Sim is a Japanese light novel series penned by Iris, with distinctive illustrations provided by Noboru Kannatsuki. It started its life as a web novel on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō platform on February 26, 2018. Later, it was picked up for print publication by Kadokawa Shoten, appearing under their Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko imprint. The first volume officially hit shelves on November 1, 2019, with Yen Press handling the English translation and release.

The narrative centers on Kousuke Takioto, a young man who finds himself reincarnated into the world of a fantasy dating simulation game. However, he doesn't land the role of the main protagonist. Instead, Kousuke awakens as the protagonist's best friend, a character typically relegated to providing comic relief. Armed with his intimate knowledge of the game's plotlines and hidden secrets, Kousuke is determined to use this foreknowledge to forge his own path and live life freely, unburdened by the game's script. The series cleverly weaves together isekai conventions with elements of comedy, action, and romance, exploring the ripple effects when a character attempts to deviate from a predetermined narrative.

The second volume of the light novel series marks Kousuke's entry into student life at Tsukuyomi Magic Academy. Here, he undergoes intense training and applies his game knowledge to his interactions with the game's heroines. Along the way, he encounters new characters and faces fresh challenges, signaling a potential shift in the story's direction. A manga adaptation, brought to life by artist Yukari Higa, began its run on the Young Ace Up website on August 20, 2020. As of January 8, 2026, Kadokawa had released three compiled volumes of this manga adaptation. Looking ahead, an anime television series adaptation produced by White Fox is scheduled to debut in October 2026, with Kazuki Ohashi directing. [edit]
