Magic Knight Rayearth
"A 1993-1995 manga by CLAMP"
Clamp
Overview
Three eighth-grade students from Tokyo stand before the Tokyo Tower when a voice calls them into another world. Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji arrive in Cephiro, a realm where Princess Emeraude lies captive and the land itself begins to crumble. Their quest to rescue the princess requires them to become legendary Magic Knights, wielding powers that summon giant mechanical beasts like the Lightning Dragon and Windy Falcon. This blend of magical girl tropes with mecha action sets the tone for a story that quickly moves beyond simple heroics to explore the heavy cost of war.
CLAMP serialized the series in Kodansha's Nakayoshi magazine from late 1993 until early 1995. The narrative spans three tankōbon volumes released between July 1994 and March 1995, followed immediately by a sequel series that ran until April 1996. While the original run focused on the girls' initial journey, the sequel delves deeper into the consequences of their actions and the political landscape of Cephiro. The work stands out for its willingness to subvert genre expectations and depict the psychological toll on young protagonists forced into combat.
