KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World!

What happens when a shut-in gamer dies and gets reincarnated into a fantasy world, only to find his goddess companion is useless, his archmage can only cast one spell per day, and his crusader is a masochist? That is the premise of KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World!, a Japanese light novel series by Natsume Akatsuki with illustrations by Kurone Mishima. The story follows Kazuma Satou, who after a pathetic death, is given a chance to start over in a world that feels like an MMORPG. He chooses the goddess Aqua to accompany him, which turns out to be a terrible decision. Together with the explosion-obsessed mage Megumin and the knight who gets excited by pain, Darkness, they form an adventuring party that is less about heroic quests and more about comedic disasters.

Akatsuki wrote the series to subvert typical fantasy tropes, and it shows. The light novels began as a web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō from December 2012 to October 2013, before being published by Kadokawa Shoten under their Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko imprint from October 2013 to May 2020, spanning 17 volumes. The print version diverges from the web original. A manga adaptation by Masahito Watari started in Monthly Dragon Age in October 2014. Studio Deen produced two anime seasons in 2016 and 2017, followed by a film from J.C.Staff in 2019. A spin-off series, KonoSuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World!, got its own anime in 2023, and a third season aired in 2024. A fourth season is on the way. Yen Press handles the English releases for both the light novels and manga.

By November 2021, the series had 10 million copies in circulation. Critics and fans have praised the humor and voice acting, though the animation quality received mixed reactions. Characters like Megumin have become fan favorites, ranking high in popularity polls. KonoSuba has earned multiple awards, proving that a dysfunctional party can be a winning formula.[edit]
