    Overview

Set over a thousand years in the future, Earth has been obliterated by a hostile alien species known as the Gauna. The remnants of humanity drift through space aboard a colossal generation ship called the Sidonia, a closed ecosystem where every resource is precious and survival is a daily struggle. The story centers on Nagate Tanikaze, a young man who has spent his entire life in the ship's secluded underground levels, isolated from society. When he emerges, he discovers he possesses extraordinary piloting skills inherited from his grandfather, a legendary Garde pilot. The Garde are giant humanoid mecha that defend Sidonia from Gauna attacks. Nagate is drafted into the defense force, where he must navigate complex social dynamics, uncover secrets about the Gauna, and confront the existential threat to humanity's existence.

The manga was created by Tsutomu Nihei, a Japanese artist known for his distinctive architectural and biomechanical style. Born in 1971 in Fukushima Prefecture, Nihei previously worked as an assistant to Tsutomu Takahashi and gained fame for earlier works like Blame! and Biomega. His background in architecture heavily influences his art, characterized by vast, claustrophobic spaces and intricate mechanical designs. For Knights of Sidonia, Nihei adopted a more accessible narrative while retaining his signature aesthetic, blending mecha combat with space opera and themes of isolation, transhumanism, and environmental decay.

The series was serialized by Kodansha in Monthly Afternoon from April 25, 2009 to September 25, 2015, and collected into 15 tankōbon volumes. An English-language release was handled by Vertical Publishing, which released all volumes between 2013 and 2016. The manga has sold over 3 million copies worldwide and received critical acclaim, winning the 39th Kodansha Manga Award in 2015 and the 47th Seiun Award in 2016. It has also been adapted into a two-season CGI anime by Polygon Pictures, a feature film titled Knights of Sidonia: Love Woven in the Stars, and a stage play.
