Overview
Keiichi Sigsawa launched Kino's Journey in March 2000 with the first volume arriving from ASCII Media Works just months later. This light novel series features a nameless traveler and her sentient motorcycle, Hermes, who visit strange nations for exactly three days before moving on. Each stop reveals a unique society with customs that challenge the pair's understanding of normalcy. The original run appeared in the magazine Dengeki hp before expanding into twenty-four collected volumes by September 2025. Kouhaku Kuroboshi provided the distinctive artwork that defined the early aesthetic of this philosophical adventure. The franchise expanded quickly beyond print. A thirteen-episode anime adaptation aired on WOWOW in 2003, followed by two visual novels for the PlayStation 2 and two theatrical films released in 2005 and 2007. Fans also received a spin-off titled Gakuen Kino, which reimagined the characters in a school setting starting in 2006. A second anime series returned in late 2017 to bring new stories to life, while various art books and drama CDs filled out the collection.
