Kemono Jihen

Deep in a mountain village, livestock turns up dead, drained of blood. The locals blame a monster. The detective Kohachi Inugami, a specialist in occult cases, arrives to investigate and instead finds a boy. Kabane has been shunned his whole life, whispered about for his strange strength and his isolation. Inugami sees something else: a half-human, half-kemono hybrid with a direct link to the supernatural world. He takes Kabane to Tokyo, where the boy joins a detective agency that handles kemono incidents. There, Kabane learns he is not the only one caught between two worlds.

Shō Aimoto launched the manga in 2016 in Shueisha's Jump Square. As of 2026, the series has 25 collected volumes. The story moves from case-of-the-week mysteries into a larger conspiracy about ancient kemono factions, human prejudice, and the price of belonging. Characters like Shiki, a fox-spirit boy with a razor tongue, and Akira, a silent corpse golem, form a makeshift family around Kabane. Their bond is tested against enemies who see hybrids as weapons or abominations.

The manga earned an anime adaptation in 2021, streaming on Crunchyroll and Netflix, and a stage play, Kemono Jihen -Tokyo Arc-, announced for September 2026. The series has drawn attention for its willingness to balance lighthearted banter with genuinely dark turns, including an episode that touches on childhood trauma.
