In a Japan constantly under siege from colossal monsters known as kaiju, Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old man, finds himself working in the less-than-glamorous field of kaiju cleanup. This is a far cry from his youthful ambition to join the elite Japan Defense Force alongside his childhood friend, Mina Ashiro. His life takes an unexpected turn when a small, parasitic kaiju infiltrates his body, granting him the extraordinary ability to transform into a powerful, humanoid kaiju himself. Designated "Kaiju No. 8" by the Defense Force, Kafka faces the challenge of concealing his dual identity while striving to pass the Defense Force's rigorous entrance exam. His motivation is to fulfill a promise made to Mina, who has since risen to the rank of captain.

The series, written and illustrated by Naoya Matsumoto, began serialization on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ platform on July 3, 2020. It has been recognized as one of the most successful new action manga series of the early 2020s. The narrative blends elements of action, adventure, and science fantasy, exploring themes of pursuing dreams at any age and overcoming personal limitations. The manga draws inspiration from Japan's rich tradition of giant monster and superhero stories, often referred to as tokusatsu.
