    Overview

Jujutsu Kaisen is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami, a pseudonymous creator born February 26, 1992, in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. Before launching his own series, Akutami worked as an assistant to Yasuhiro Kano on Kiss × Death and Yoshiyuki Nishi on Muhyo & Roji's Bureau of Supernatural Investigation. The manga began serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump on March 5, 2018, and concluded on September 30, 2024, spanning 271 chapters collected into 30 tankōbon volumes. A four-chapter prequel, originally serialized in Jump GIGA in 2017 under the title Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School and later retitled Jujutsu Kaisen 0, was compiled into a single volume, bringing the complete series to 275 chapters across 31 volumes. Viz Media publishes the English edition.

The story follows Yuji Itadori, a high school student with immense physical strength who swallows a cursed finger to save his friends, becoming the host for Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses. Instead of immediate execution, the powerful sorcerer Satoru Gojo enrolls Yuji at Tokyo Jujutsu High under a conditional sentence: Yuji must consume all twenty of Sukuna's fingers, then be executed once Sukuna is fully resurrected and destroyed. Alongside classmates Nobara Kugisaki and Megumi Fushiguro, Yuji battles cursed spirits born from negative human emotions, exploring themes of moral ambiguity, sacrifice, and humanity. The Shibuya Incident arc is celebrated for its narrative intensity and emotional impact.

The series blends dark fantasy, adventure, supernatural, school, and urban fantasy genres. Its core themes examine the cyclical nature of curses from human negativity, the value of life and sacrifice, the moral gray areas of using cursed energy for protection, and a critique of rigid hierarchical systems. As of December 2024, the manga has surpassed 100 million copies in circulation worldwide, making it one of the best-selling manga series ever. In 2021, it was the best-selling manga in Japan with over 30 million copies sold that year. The final arc received mixed reactions for its pacing and conclusion, but overall critical reception remains strong.
