    Overview

Hiroya Oku launched Inuyashiki in January 2014, filling the pages of Kodansha's Evening magazine with a story that blends sci-fi horror with human drama. The series ran for three years before concluding in July 2017, resulting in ten collected volumes. Oku crafted a narrative where two strangers face an identical fate after a meteorite crash lands them inside advanced robotic bodies. One man is a lonely senior citizen named Ichiro Inuyashiki who seeks to help others, while the other is a violent teenager named Hiro Shishigami who uses his new powers for chaos. Their contrasting paths drive the plot through intense battles and moral questions about what makes us human.

The story takes a dark turn when Hiro Shishigami begins a killing spree that forces the elderly Inuyashiki into action. Despite being mocked by his own family and bullied at work due to his age and physical ailments, Inuyashiki chooses to protect civilians from the rampaging teen. This dynamic flips typical superhero tropes on their head, placing an octogenarian at the center of the hero role while the antagonist is a disaffected youth. The manga explores how trauma shapes morality, showing how the same technology can create a saint or a monster depending on the person wielding it.

Oku does not shy away from graphic violence or heavy themes as the conflict escalates toward its tragic conclusion. The final arcs move quickly compared to earlier chapters, rushing through the resolution of the war between the two robots. Critics praised the emotional weight of the character dynamics but noted the pacing issues in the ending. The series stands as a distinct entry in Oku's bibliography, following the philosophical depth found in Gantz without relying on direct sequels or prequels.
