Overview
Kenichi Sonoda launched Gunsmith Cats in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon magazine in November 1990, creating a narrative that blended high-speed vehicular chases with precise mechanical schematics. The story centers on Irene Rally Vincent, a former bounty hunter who runs a firearms shop in Chicago alongside Minnie May Hopkins, a demolitions expert with a history as a call girl. Their business serves as a front for taking on dangerous jobs involving fugitive recovery and weapon retrieval while navigating corrupt police forces and international arms dealers.
Sonoda filled the seven original volumes with technical diagrams explaining the inner workings of various guns and vehicles, grounding the action in engineering reality rather than pure fantasy. The series concluded its initial run in April 1997 after establishing a reputation for featuring strong female leads in a male-dominated genre. A sequel titled Gunsmith Cats Burst followed years later, serialized from July 2004 to September 2008 to expand on the characters' backstories and continue their adventures.
The franchise gained significant traction through a three-episode Original Video Animation produced by Oriental Light and Magic between 1995 and 1996. This adaptation featured an original storyline focusing on an arms trafficking ring and a relentless assassin known as Jackal, distinct from the manga plot. The OVA became a cult classic in Western markets, praised for its animation quality and faithful tone capture before receiving renewed attention through modern digital releases.
