Kumo Kagyū's Goblin Slayer is a dark fantasy light novel series that strips heroism down to its brutal core. The story follows a nameless adventurer whose sole purpose is exterminating goblins, creatures typically dismissed as low-level nuisances by other heroes. But Kagyū makes clear: goblins are cunning, vicious, and deadly when underestimated. The series opens with a chilling prologue that sets the tone for its unflinching violence and psychological depth. Published by SB Creative in Japan starting in February 2016, the novels have since been released in English by Yen Press, with each volume averaging around 250 pages. Noboru Kannatsuki's illustrations lend a stark beauty to the grim world, contrasting delicate character designs with the gore of battle.

The series belongs to the dark fantasy subgenre, often compared to grimdark works like Berserk for its realistic consequences and moral ambiguity. Unlike typical RPG-inspired stories, Goblin Slayer focuses on the dirty, tactical work of survival rather than epic quests. The franchise expanded into audio dramas and an anime adaptation by White Fox that aired in 2018, followed by a 2020 film and a second season by Liden Films in 2023.
