Fool Night

Fool Night is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kasumi Yasuda. Set in a distant future where thick clouds block the sun and oxygen levels are critically low, humanity has developed transfloration, a technology that transforms people into plants to produce breathable air. The story follows Toshiro Kamiya, a man struggling to support his ill mother, who considers undergoing the irreversible procedure for a financial payout. The series explores deep ethical questions about sacrifice, exploitation, and the true cost of survival in a collapsing world.

Serialized in Shogakukan's Big Comic Superior since November 2020, Fool Night has been collected into twelve volumes as of January 2026. The English edition is published by Viz Media, with the first volume released in June 2024. The manga has earned critical praise and award nominations, including a spot on the 2023 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! list for male readers and a nomination at the 50th Angoulême International Comics Festival.

The series blends dystopian science fiction with body horror and thriller elements, tackling themes of capitalism, government overreach, and environmental collapse. Its mature content includes depictions of child abuse and suicide, making it suitable for adult readers. [edit]
