Fist of the North Star
"Hokuto no Ken"
Buronson
Overview
Buronson and Tetsuo Hara set their story in the year 199X, after a nuclear war has burned civilization down to a wasteland of gangs and warlords. Kenshiro walks into it as the successor to Hokuto Shinken, an assassination art whose practitioners strike hidden pressure points and destroy an opponent from inside. His chest carries seven scars arranged in the shape of the Big Dipper, and he spends the series protecting survivors who cannot protect themselves.
Shueisha serialized the manga in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1983 to 1988. The run came to 245 chapters, gathered into 27 tankōbon volumes under the Jump Comics imprint. Viz Media issued the complete series in English as hardcovers between 2021 and 2025, giving readers outside Japan the full arc for the first time in a uniform edition.
Sales passed 100 million copies worldwide, and by 2007 the series ranked as the seventh best-selling title in Shōnen Jump history. The premise is simple enough to summarize in a sentence and elastic enough to sustain a franchise: a strong man, a ruined world, and a code that says the strong owe something to the weak. That combination carried the story into anime, film, and video games, and it still draws new adaptations four decades after the final chapter.
