    Overview

Gen Urobuchi wrote this dark prequel to the Fate/stay night visual novel, with Takashi Takeuchi handling the illustrations. Type-Moon released the four-volume series between December 2006 and 2007. The narrative centers on the Fourth Holy Grail War in Fuyuki City, a deadly tournament where seven mages known as Masters summon legendary heroes called Servants. These warriors from across history clash until only one remains to claim the Holy Grail, a chalice capable of granting any wish. Kiritsugu Emiya enters the fray representing his wife's family, the Einzberns, bringing a ruthless pragmatism that sets him apart from other participants. The story gained massive attention through adaptations, including an anime by Ufotable that aired in two seasons during 2011 and 2012. A manga version ran from 2011 to 2017 under Kadokawa Shoten before Dark Horse Comics brought it to North America. Critics praised the show for its complex characters and heavy themes rather than simple action sequences. Commercially, the project succeeded handsomely, selling thousands of Blu-ray sets and winning multiple Newtype Anime Awards for Title of the Year.
