    Overview

Lynn Okamoto's Elfen Lied began its run in Weekly Young Jump during June 2002, concluding in August 2005 with a total of 107 chapters collected into twelve volumes. The narrative explores the violent friction between humans and Diclonii, a mutant species distinguished by two horns atop their heads and invisible telekinetic arms known as vectors. These limbs allow the mutants to manipulate and destroy objects from a distance, turning them into formidable weapons. The story centers on Lucy, a teenage girl born with these traits who suffers through severe abuse before escaping her laboratory to seek revenge against the society that rejected her. Her journey forces readers to confront uncomfortable questions about identity, prejudice, and what it truly means to be human. The title references a German poem called Elfenlied, meaning song of the fairies, which appears within the text. Okamoto weaves themes of discrimination, jealousy, and regret into a plot marked by graphic violence and emotional intensity. While the series gained widespread attention through a thirteen-episode anime adaptation produced by Arms in 2004, the manga offers a distinct conclusion since the show aired before the original work finished. Dark Horse Comics brought the full Japanese version to North American audiences, preserving the complete arc of this dark tale.
