Don Quixote
"The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha"
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra
Overview
Alonso Quijano, a fifty-year-old hidalgo from the dusty plains of La Mancha, spends his days buried in books about knights and ladies until he can no longer tell fiction from reality. He dons rusty armor, names his skinny mare Rocinante, and declares himself Don Quixote to restore the lost age of chivalry. His first act is to recruit Sancho Panza, a superstitious farmer who wants an island governorship, as his squire. Together they launch into a world where windmills become giants and inns turn into castles, blending delusional heroism with brutal physical comedy.
The narrative unfolds across two distinct volumes published ten years apart. Part I arrived in November 1605 from publisher Francisco de Robles, while Part II followed in April 1615 from Juan de la Cuesta. This gap allowed unauthorized sequels to flood the market, forcing Cervantes to address those impostors directly within the second book. The story structure shifts between Quixote's lofty ideals and Sancho's grounded pragmatism, eventually showing the master learning wisdom from the servant while the servant occasionally adopts the knight's illusions.
Mark Twain later observed that this work swept away all admiration for the silly romances that came before it. The term quixotic entered the English language to describe noble but futile attempts at impossible goals. While initially received as a humorous satire, critics now hail it as the first modern novel and a foundational text of Western literature. Its influence spans philosophy, psychology, and political theory, proving that a madman trying to fix the world resonates just as deeply in the 21st century as it did in the 17th.
