D.Gray-man

Katsura Hoshino created a dark fantasy world where an alternate 19th century faces destruction from demonic entities called Akuma. The narrative centers on Allen Walker, a young exorcist with a cursed left eye capable of seeing dead souls and a mechanical right arm known as the Crown Clown. He joins the Black Order, a secret group dedicated to finding and weaponizing Innocence, an ancient substance designed to combat the Millennium Earl's army. The Earl aims to build Noah's Ark to end the world, believing humanity has already been judged.

Serialization started in Weekly Shōnen Jump in May 2004 but frequently paused due to Hoshino's health issues. The series moved to Jump Square in November 2009 before entering an indefinite hiatus in January 2013. It resumed in July 2015 under the title D.Gray-man: Crown in Jump SQ.Crown and shifted again to Jump SQ.Rise in April 2018. As of July 2025, the chapters collected into 29 tankōbon volumes in Japan. Viz Media licensed the English version and released 28 volumes by November 2023.

The franchise includes a spin-off novel titled D.Gray-man: Reverse and two anime adaptations produced by TMS Entertainment. Over 27 million copies circulate worldwide, placing the title among Shueisha's bestsellers. Critics praise the visually appealing character designs and Gothic elements, though some note that fight sequences can become difficult to follow due to complex choreography. [edit]
