Crayon Shin-chan

Yoshito Usui created Crayon Shin-chan in 1990, introducing readers to Shinnosuke Nohara, a five-year-old boy whose unfiltered commentary on adult life turned Japanese comedy manga on its head. Set in the suburban town of Kasukabe, Saitama, each chapter follows Shin-chan as he torments his long-suffering mother Misae, his salaryman father Hiroshi, his kindergarten teachers like the perpetually frustrated Miss Matsuzaka, and his neighbors. The humor relies heavily on potty jokes, sexual innuendo (delivered with innocent ignorance), and exaggerated reactions, Usui’s art style, with its round heads and thick eyebrows, amplifies every gag.

The original manga ran in Weekly Manga Action (published by Futabasha) from August 1990 until Usui’s sudden death in September 2009 at age 50. The series collected 50 tankōbon volumes. In 2010, a successor series titled New Crayon Shin-chan began in Manga Town, written and drawn by the Manga Team, a group of Usui’s former assistants, under the supervision of his estate. That series continues today, with over 14 volumes released as of 2024.

The anime adaptation debuted on TV Asahi on April 13, 1992, and never stopped. It has aired over 1,200 episodes and been broadcast in 45 countries and 30 languages. The franchise also includes 31 annual theatrical films (starting with 1993’s Action Kamen vs. Leotard Devil), more than 20 video games, and a massive merchandise line. By 2023, combined sales of the original and successor manga exceeded 148 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling manga series ever. Despite, or because of, its crude humor, Shin-chan became a pop culture icon in Japan and across Asia, with catchphrases like “Ora” and the “Mr. Rooter” dance entering everyday speech.[edit]
