In the gritty streets of Tokyo, a stray cat with a chain-smoking habit drifts through the underbelly of city life. Chainsmoker Cat, originally serialized as Yani Neko in Japanese, follows this feline antihero as it navigates alleyways, befriends other strays, and gets entangled with humans who are just as lost. The manga blends slice-of-life melancholy with a noir aesthetic, creating a world where cigarettes and solitude go paw in paw. NyanNyanFactory, the creator, brings a raw, sketch-like art style that mirrors the cat's rough edges. The series began its run in Kodansha's seinen magazine Weekly Young Magazine in February 2023, and as of its latest volume, it spans roughly 200 pages per collected edition. The story's slow-burn pacing and focus on quiet moments set it apart from typical animal manga. An anime adaptation by Bibury Animation Studios is set to premiere in July 2026, promising to translate the manga's moody atmosphere into moving images.[edit]
