Unlike many contemporaries, this magazine strictly avoids science fiction and fantasy tropes. Instead, it focuses on realistic narratives grounded in human experience, covering historical dramas, suspense thrillers, sports stories, and romance. Notable series like Oishinbo and Marmalade Boy originated here, showcasing complex adult themes and social commentary without relying on supernatural elements.

The magazine serves as a crucial incubator for creators who later become household names in Japan. While Naoki Urasawa is often linked to its sibling title Big Comic Superior, the broader family includes legends like Jiro Taniguchi.
