Beat & Motion
Naoki Fujita
Overview
Kei Kiyoharu is a classical pianist who can make a Steinway weep, but he feels nothing himself. His playing is technically flawless, emotionally empty. Tsubasa Aoyagi is an actor who throws himself into every role with raw, unguarded passion, yet he can't land a steady gig. Their worlds collide when Kei is hired as the pianist for a stage production starring Tsubasa. The play is a disaster at first. Kei follows the score with cold precision; Tsubasa improvises mid-scene, chasing a feeling. They clash, then slowly learn to listen to each other.
Written and illustrated by Naoki Fujita, the manga draws heavily on his own background in theater and classical music. Fujita spent years playing piano in small venues and working backstage on amateur productions before turning to manga. That lived experience shows in every panel: the way a pianist's fingers hover before a chord, the sweat on an actor's brow during a monologue, the silence backstage after a bad performance. The story doesn't romanticize artistic struggle. It shows the grind, the rejection, the small victories that nobody claps for.
