Barakamon
Satsuki Yoshino
Overview
Barakamon is a heartwarming manga series by Satsuki Yoshino that follows Seishu Handa, a talented but arrogant young calligrapher. After punching a senior curator who criticized his work, Handa is exiled to the remote Gotō Islands off the coast of Kyūshū. There, his rigid, city-bred sensibilities clash with the island's laid-back, close-knit community. Through his interactions with the lively locals, especially the energetic seven-year-old Naru Kotoishi, Handa learns to loosen up and rediscover the joy in his art. The story masterfully blends slice-of-life comedy with genuine character growth, exploring themes of creativity, community, and finding one's place in the world.
The series began as three one-shots in Square Enix's Gangan Powered from 2008 to 2009, then launched as a full serial on the Gangan Online website in February 2009. It also ran in Monthly Shōnen Gangan from July 2014 to December 2018, with a limited return from April to September 2023. The 19 tankōbon volumes were published by Square Enix. In North America, Yen Press licensed both the original manga and its spin-off, Handa-kun. The latter, also by Yoshino, is a comedic prequel set in Handa's high school days, serialized from 2013 to 2016.
A 12-episode anime adaptation by Kinema Citrus aired in 2014, bringing the island's charm to life with vibrant animation and a warm score. A live-action drama ran in 2023, while the spin-off got its own 12-episode anime in 2016, produced by Diomedéa. Funimation (later Crunchyroll) handled the English releases for both anime. Barakamon's enduring appeal lies in its gentle humor, memorable characters, and the quiet beauty of its island setting, making it a standout in the slice-of-life genre.
