Akane-banashi

Akane-banashi follows Akane Osaki, a high school girl whose father Shinta was a promising rakugo performer until he was publicly expelled from the Arakawa school by its head, Master Issho Arakawa, during his final shin'uchi exam. The humiliation drove Shinta to abandon rakugo entirely. Determined to understand her father's failure and restore his honor, Akane dedicates herself to mastering rakugo. She trains under Master Shiguma Arakawa, the only one who defended her father, and enters a competitive world of apprentices, aiming to surpass Issho and reach the shin'uchi rank herself. The story weaves rigorous training, rivalries, and the art of crafting comedic and dramatic tales on stage.

Written by Yuki Suenaga and illustrated by Takamasa Moue, the series is supervised by professional rakugoka Kikuhiko Hayashiya to ensure authentic depictions of the traditional Japanese storytelling art. Serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump since February 14, 2022, the manga has been collected into 22 tankōbon volumes as of June 2026. Viz Media handles the English-language release in North America. An anime adaptation by Zexcs premiered in April 2026, bringing the performances to life with voice and animation.

The series has been praised for making rakugo accessible and compelling, with strong character writing and expressive artwork. It won the 2023 Next Manga Award in the Print Manga category and received nominations for the Eisner, Harvey, and Manga Taisho awards. By early 2025, circulation exceeded 1.5 million copies, reflecting its commercial and cultural impact in reviving interest in rakugo among younger audiences.[edit]
