Overview
In 1995, Marvel Comics unleashed a massive crossover event that rewrote the X-Men universe for an entire year. The story, known as Age of Apocalypse, unfolded across Earth-295 after Legion traveled back in time to kill Magneto but accidentally murdered Professor Xavier instead. Without Xavier's guidance, Apocalypse seized control of North America a decade early, creating a dystopian world where mutants lived in constant fear. This alternate reality replaced standard X-Men titles with new series like Gambit and the X-Ternals and X-Calibre, all bookended by the pivotal one-shots X-Men Alpha and X-Men Omega. Resistance groups formed under leaders like Magneto, while Bishop eventually returned to fix the timeline and restore the original history. The impact of this dark saga lingered long after the initial run concluded. Marvel revisited the setting in 2005 with a special anniversary issue exploring life after the event ended. Later stories included the Dark Angel Saga in 2011 and a full ongoing series launched in 2012 that ran for fourteen issues. The world also appeared during the 2015 Secret Wars crossover. Plans for a new narrative titled X-Men of Apocalypse emerged in May 2025, set to launch in November under writer Jeph Loeb.
