A Silent Voice

Yoshitoki Ōima crafted a poignant narrative in A Silent Voice, originally debuting as a one-shot before running as a serialized manga in Weekly Shōnen Magazine from August 2013 to November 2014. The story spans seven collected volumes and explores the heavy burden of bullying through the eyes of Shoya Ishida, a former bully now seeking redemption from his past actions against Shoko Nishimiya, a deaf classmate. Ōima blends this emotional journey with themes of communication barriers and self-forgiveness, creating a work that resonates deeply beyond typical genre expectations. Kodansha USA later licensed the series for North American release, while Crunchyroll Manga handled the digital distribution. The project expanded into an anime theatrical film by Kyoto Animation in September 2016, bringing the characters to life on screen.[edit]
