Overview
Charles Dickens released this novella on December 19, 1843, through London publisher Chapman & Hall with illustrations by John Leech. The story follows Ebenezer Scrooge, a bitter old miser who refuses to celebrate the season until three spirits visit him after his former partner Jacob Marley dies. These ghosts show Scrooge his lonely past, the struggles of the present, and a grim future if he does not change. By dawn, the man becomes generous and kind. Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol while Britain reexamined holiday traditions like carols and trees. He drew from his own childhood memories and stories by Washington Irving and Douglas Jerrold. A visit to the Field Lane Ragged School for street children also shaped his view on poverty and redemption. Critics loved the book immediately, selling out the first edition by Christmas Eve. Thirteen editions appeared by 1844 despite illegal copies flooding the market later that year. The author began public readings in 1849 and performed the tale 127 times before his death in 1870. It has never gone out of print and remains a staple across many languages and media adaptations. The work helped define modern Western celebrations by emphasizing family gatherings, festive meals, dancing, games, and a spirit of giving.
