    Overview

Police Officer Yokota met his end in the line of duty while chasing a criminal gang through the streets of 1960s Tokyo. Dr. Tani, a scientist working on a secret government project, recovered Yokota's body and rebuilt it using advanced cybernetic technology. This resurrection created 8 Man, a hero who possesses superhuman strength, speed, and durability alongside hidden weapons in his limbs. The character operates under a codename that reflects the eight artificial components replacing his original human parts.

The original manga ran in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from 1963 to 1966, establishing Japan's first cyborg superhero franchise. Kazumasa Hirai wrote the story while Jiro Kuwata provided the gritty artwork that defined the series' visual style. An anime adaptation followed shortly after, airing on the Tokyo Broadcasting System for 56 episodes between November 1963 and December 1964. The show introduced Western audiences to the concept of a machine-man hybrid long before similar characters became mainstream in the West.
