About
Joseph-Armand Bombardier opened a small workshop in Valcourt, Quebec, on January 29, 1942. The venture began by producing snowmobiles and quickly expanded into railway vehicles and aircraft manufacturing. By the late 1980s, the company had grown into North America's largest producer of rail cars and the world's leading manufacturer of snowmobiles through aggressive acquisitions.
A major shift occurred in the early 2000s when the firm entered the commercial aviation market with the CSeries program. Financial strain from this expansion forced a restructuring that saw the sale of its rail division to Alstom in 2021 and the C Series program to Airbus in 2018. The remaining entity refocused entirely on luxury business aviation.
Today Bombardier Inc. operates as a specialized manufacturer of high-end corporate jets. The company maintains facilities in Dorval, Connecticut, and South Carolina while competing directly with Gulfstream and Dassault Aviation. In 2023 it delivered 138 aircraft to reclaim the top spot in global business jet production.
