Bolton Wanderers F.C.

Bolton Wanderers traces its origins to 1874 when local cricket enthusiasts formed Christ Church Football Club. The group adopted the name Bolton Wanderers later that same year and became a founding member of the Football League in 1888. Based in Greater Manchester, the club has spent most of its existence competing in the top two tiers of English football. Their history includes four FA Cup victories, with the 1923 final against West Ham United remaining a significant cultural touchstone known as the White Horse Final.

The club plays at the Toughsheet Community Stadium after moving from Burnden Park following the tragic crowd crush disaster of 1946. While they have never won the top-flight league title, Bolton secured the Second Division championship in 1909 and reached the First Division final in 1958. Recent seasons have seen the team return to the Championship after promotion from League One, with Steven Schumacher appointed as manager in July 2026 to lead their push for playoff contention. Christ Church FC was established in 1874 by members of the local cricket club before rebranding to Bolton Wanderers later that year. The club joined the newly formed Football League in 1888 as one of twelve original members. Their early success culminated in an FA Cup victory in 1923 at the opening of Wembley Stadium. This match is remembered for the white horse used to clear spectators who had climbed onto the pitch during the game against West Ham United.

Bolton added further silverware with FA Cup wins in 1926, 1929, and 1958. The 1958 campaign saw them reach the First Division final but lose to Manchester United. A major turning point occurred on March 21, 1946, when a fatal crowd crush at Burnden Park claimed 33 lives. This tragedy forced the club to leave their historic home and eventually build the University of Bolton Stadium, now known as the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

Ownership changes marked recent years with Tim Leiweke acquiring a minority stake in July 2026. The club faced squad turnover in August 2026 when winger Jordi Osei-Tutu moved to Millwall. Despite these shifts, the team maintained competitiveness in the Championship, facing league leaders Queens Park Rangers while developing talent through their U21 side which defeated Charlton Athletic 1-0 in August 2026.
