About
Body Head Bangerz is an American hip hop group formed by boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. in 2004. Jones, a former four-division world champion, launched the group as part of his Body Head Entertainment label, aiming to showcase Southern hip hop talent from the Pensacola area and beyond. The original lineup included Jones, Magic, Choppa, Snappa, and Bone Crusher, all of whom brought connections to the No Limit Records and Dirty South scenes.
The group's debut album, Body Head Bangerz: Volume One, dropped on August 3, 2004, and was later re-released by Universal Music on October 26 with an expanded tracklist. The album featured high-profile guests like YoungBloodZ, Juvenile, Lil' Flip, Bun B, Petey Pablo, B.G., and Mike Jones. The lead single, "I Smoke, I Drank," became a modest hit, peaking at number 81 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 30 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart.
After the album cycle, the group went dormant as Jones focused on boxing. Tragedy struck on March 1, 2013, when member Magic and his wife were killed in a car crash in Mississippi. Their daughter was the sole survivor. This loss spurred a reunion: in 2015, Body Head Bangerz returned with The EP under Jones' new label Body Head Bangerz Music, featuring the single "Can't Lose." Since then, the group has released occasional standalone singles, including "Yeah" in 2018.
Formation Story
Roy Jones Jr. had already ventured into music with his 2001 solo album Round One when he decided to form a group. He recruited rappers from the Southern hip hop circuit, many with ties to Master P's No Limit Records. Choppa and Magic were both No Limit alumni, while Bone Crusher had scored a hit with "Never Scared" in 2003. Snappa rounded out the core. Jones bankrolled the project with his boxing earnings, recording the debut album in Florida and Atlanta.
The group's name and concept were extensions of Jones' boxing persona — "Body Head Bangerz" referenced his devastating punching style. They signed with Universal Music for wider distribution after an initial independent release.

Musical Style
Body Head Bangerz's sound is rooted in Southern hip hop and the Dirty South tradition. Their debut album leaned heavily on synthesized horns, rolling basslines, and call-and-response hooks, drawing direct comparisons to No Limit Records' late-90s aesthetic. Lyrically, the group focused on street life, wealth, and bravado, with Jones often weaving in boxing metaphors.
After their 2015 return, the production shifted toward more contemporary trap-influenced beats while maintaining the aggressive delivery and Southern drawl. Tracks like "Can't Lose" and "Yeah" incorporate modern hi-hat patterns and melodic hooks, showing an evolution without abandoning their roots.

Cultural Impact
Body Head Bangerz represents a unique crossover between professional boxing and hip hop. Roy Jones Jr. was one of the first elite boxers to seriously pursue a rap career, paving the way for later athletes-turned-musicians. The group also helped spotlight Southern hip hop at a time when the region was gaining mainstream traction, collaborating with key figures from the No Limit and Cash Money camps.
Their most lasting cultural moment came with the tragic death of Magic in 2013, which brought attention to the group's legacy and led to a reunion. While their commercial impact was modest, they remain a footnote in the history of athlete-entrepreneurs in music.

Trivia
Roy Jones Jr. funded the group's debut album entirely from his boxing purses. Two members, Choppa and Magic, were former No Limit Records artists. The album's sound was deliberately modeled after No Limit's signature style. Magic's death in a car crash in 2013 led directly to the group's reunion and 2015 EP. "I Smoke, I Drank" remains their only Billboard Hot 100 entry.
