Overview
The BMW X5 arrived in 1999 as the E53 generation, marking BMW's first SUV and a deliberate departure from truck-based competitors. BMW branded it a "Sports Activity Vehicle" to underscore its on-road focus, a strategy that proved prescient as the segment grew. The first generation shared components with the Range Rover L322, including hill descent control, and its engine and electronics came from the E39 5 Series. Production centered at BMW's Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, with additional assembly in Russia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.
The fourth-generation G05, launched in November 2018, brought significant size increases: length grew by 36 mm to 4,922 mm, width by 66 mm to 2,004 mm, and wheelbase extended by 42 mm to 2,975 mm. This generation introduced a larger Head-Up Display with a 7 × 3.5 inch projection surface, optimized 3D graphics, and gesture control alongside touchscreen, voice, and controller inputs. The two-piece split tailgate gained hands-free operation with Comfort Access, and boot capacity ranges from 650 to 1,860 liters. An optional third row became available in December 2018.
The X5 M Competition, first released for the 2010 model year, now produces 617 hp from a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8, paired with an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. Over 2.2 million X5s had been sold by late 2018, making it BMW's best-selling model in the United States. The X5's success spawned the entire SAV lineup, starting with the X3 in 2003 and the X6 in 2008, which shares its platform.
