BMC Otomotiv has been a cornerstone of Turkey's industrial landscape since 1964, when Ergün Özakat partnered with the British Motor Corporation to launch local heavy vehicle production. That initial joint venture gave the British firm a 26% stake while establishing an assembly plant in İzmir that would eventually evolve into a major manufacturing powerhouse. The company spent decades transitioning from simple licensed assembly to full domestic production, building a reputation for rugged durability that resonated deeply with Turkish logistics and defense sectors.

Ownership of the brand shifted several times over the last sixty years, moving through Çukurova Holding before landing under the management of the Turkish Savings Deposit Insurance Fund in 2013 following financial restructuring. A significant turning point arrived in 2017 when a consortium led by Ethem Sancak and Talip Öztürk acquired the company for approximately 751 million Turkish Lira. This new partnership brought backing from the Qatar Armed Forces Industry Committee, signaling a strategic pivot toward expanding both commercial exports and military vehicle lines. [edit]
