Blue Origin

Jeff Bezos started Blue Origin in September 2000 with a quiet, long-term bet: build a path for millions of people to live and work in space. For its first decade, the company operated almost entirely under the radar, funded by Bezos selling roughly a billion dollars of Amazon stock each year. The tortoise emblem and the Latin motto Gradatim Ferociter (step by step, ferociously) aren't just decoration, they sum up a culture that prizes methodical engineering over flashy deadlines.

Blue Origin broke into public view in 2003 with suborbital tests at its West Texas facility, but the real milestone came in 2015 when the New Shepard rocket made the first successful vertical landing of a reused booster. By 2021, the same vehicle was carrying passengers, including Bezos and Wally Funk, one of the Mercury 13, to the edge of space. The company has since logged 25 New Shepard missions, seven of them crewed, before a 2022 booster failure grounded the fleet for fifteen months. It returned to flight in December 2023.

Beyond tourism, Blue Origin is building the heavy-lift New Glenn rocket (98 meters tall) for orbital launches, and its BE-4 engine powers United Launch Alliance's Vulcan rocket. Under a $3.4 billion NASA contract, the company is developing the Blue Moon Mark 2 lander for the Artemis V mission. The sheer scale of these projects, a second launch pad at Cape Canaveral, a Huntsville engine plant, and the sprawling Kent headquarters, reflects an ambition that extends far beyond joyrides to the Kármán line.[edit]
