Blue Giant

Dai Miyamoto is a high school student in Sendai, Japan, with no musical background when a friend drags him to a live jazz club. The sound of a saxophone hits him like a thunderbolt. That night, he decides he will become the world's greatest jazz saxophonist and buys a secondhand horn the next day. What follows is a story of obsession, sweat, and raw determination as Dai teaches himself to play through sheer repetition, practicing for hours alone in a park until his fingers bleed.

The manga follows Dai from his first clumsy notes through his early gigs and the formation of a trio with a pianist and drummer. After graduating, he moves to Tokyo, busking in parks and sitting in at tiny clubs, slowly earning respect from older players. Shinichi Ishizuka draws the music in explosive, abstract bursts of line and motion, making you feel the rhythm and emotional weight of every performance. The series ran for ten volumes from 2013 to 2016, collecting chapters serialized in Shogakukan's Big Comic magazine.

Critical reception has been strong. Reviewers praise how Ishizuka turns silent panels into something that swings, and how he captures both the joy and the grueling loneliness of practicing an instrument. The manga won the Grand Prize at the 20th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2017 and the Shogakukan Manga Award in the General category the same year. An anime film adaptation directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa and scored by jazz pianist Hiromi Uehara hit Japanese theaters in February 2023, with GKIDS releasing it internationally in 2024.

Blue Giant is the first part of a larger saga. The story continues in Blue Giant Supreme (2016-2020, 11 volumes), where Dai moves to Europe, then Blue Giant Explorer (2020-2023, 11 volumes) set in the United States, and the ongoing Blue Giant Momentum (2023-present). A spin-off, Blue Giant: The World of Jazz, takes a more educational look at jazz history. As of 2023, the entire series had over 10 million copies in circulation worldwide.[edit]
