In 17th-century Japan, a time of isolation when the country was closed to outsiders, a fierce master swordswoman named Mizu lives in disguise. Her mixed heritage, marked by striking blue eyes, makes her an outcast in a society that shuns those with foreign blood. Mizu's existence is consumed by a singular goal: revenge. She is hunting down the four white men who were present in Japan when she was born, one of whom she suspects is her father.

To achieve her aims, Mizu must conceal her true gender, as women were forbidden from practicing the way of the samurai. Her path is a perilous one, filled with intricate challenges and dangerous encounters across the land. During her journey, she unexpectedly takes on a companion: Ringo, a cheerful soba maker born without hands. Ringo dreams of becoming a great samurai and finds a sense of purpose and belonging with Mizu, becoming one of the few who knows her secret and often serving as her moral compass.

The narrative also weaves in the story of Princess Akemi, the daughter of Lord Tokunobu Daichi. Betrothed to the Shogun's second son, Akemi yearns for autonomy over her own life, a desire that echoes Mizu's own struggle for freedom. Her life takes a dramatic turn when Taigen, a samurai with a history of tormenting Mizu in their youth, is defeated by Mizu. This event accelerates Akemi's arranged marriage, prompting her to flee her home in search of Taigen, adopting a new identity and crossing paths with Mizu later on.

Mizu's pursuit leads her to figures like Heiji Shindo, a shrewd weapons dealer, and Abijah Fowler, an Irishman who fits the profile of one of the men she seeks. The series delves deep into themes of identity, the sting of prejudice, the consuming nature of vengeance, and the fight for self-determination in a rigidly controlled society. Mizu grapples with deep-seated feelings of self-hatred and internalized racism tied to her mixed ancestry, a struggle visually represented in a dream where she confronts a version of herself with pale skin and white hair.
