    Overview

Yharnam is a city that never sleeps, its streets perpetually bathed in the amber glow of gas lamps, its alleys crawling with things that were once human. Bloodborne, released on March 24, 2015, for the PlayStation 4, drops you into this Gothic nightmare as a Hunter, an outsider seeking a cure for a mysterious blood-borne disease. But the cure is a lie, and the city's affliction runs deeper than any plague. What begins as a hunt for beasts slowly peels back to reveal cosmic horrors, ancient gods, and a truth that shatters the sanity of anyone who gazes upon it. Developed by FromSoftware with support from Japan Studio and published by Sony, the game is directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, the architect of the Dark Souls formula, but it trades that series' medieval gloom for a Victorian fever dream inspired by Bram Stoker, H.P. Lovecraft, and the real-world architecture of Romania and the Czech Republic.

Combat is a radical departure from the deliberate, shield-heavy style of Dark Souls. There are no shields here. Instead, you wield trick weapons that transform between two forms mid-swing, and a sidearm firearm that can stagger enemies, leaving them open for visceral attacks. The rally system rewards aggression: take a hit, and you can win back lost health by striking back immediately. It's a ballet of violence that pushes you to stay in the enemy's face, dodging and weaving, never backing down. The world itself is a labyrinth of interconnected shortcuts, each new area looping back on itself in ways that make exploration a constant thrill. You'll descend from the rooftops of Central Yharnam to the chalice dungeons beneath, each step deepening the mystery.

Bloodborne was a critical and commercial triumph, selling 7.46 million copies by February 2022. It won numerous Game of the Year awards and is routinely cited among the greatest games ever made. The Old Hunters expansion, released in November 2015, added a wealth of new content, including the infamous Orphan of Kos boss. The game's universe has since expanded into a card game, a board game, and comic books, with an R-rated animated film adaptation announced by Sony in 2026. Yet despite its legacy, Bloodborne remains trapped on the PlayStation 4, with no PC port or PS5 remaster ever released, a decision that continues to baffle even former Sony executives like Shuhei Yoshida.

    Gameplay

The core loop of Bloodborne is a brutal dance of aggression. You have no shield; your left hand holds a firearm, your right a trick weapon that shifts between two forms, like a saw cleaver that extends into a long blade. The rally system lets you reclaim lost health by counterattacking, so the best defense is a relentless offense. Enemies stagger when hit, and a well-timed gunshot can parry them, opening a visceral attack for massive damage. Stamina management and dodge timing are everything. The game's levels are masterclasses in interconnected design, with shortcuts that loop back to lamps, the game's checkpoints. The Chalice Dungeons offer procedurally generated labyrinths for those who crave more, and the Old Hunters expansion adds some of the toughest bosses in the series, including the dreaded Orphan of Kos.

    Story

The story of Bloodborne unfolds through environmental clues, item descriptions, and cryptic NPC dialogue rather than traditional cutscenes. You awaken in Yharnam after receiving a blood transfusion, and the game's opening line, 'Oh, yes... Paleblood,' sets the tone. The city is afflicted by a plague that turns people into beasts, and the Healing Church, which once promised salvation through blood ministration, is at the heart of the corruption. As you hunt beasts, you uncover a deeper truth: the blood is linked to the Great Ones, cosmic beings that exist beyond human comprehension. The game's narrative shifts from Gothic horror to Lovecraftian cosmic terror, culminating in a choice of endings that reveal the Hunter's true role in the cycle of the dream. The DLC, The Old Hunters, fills in the backstory of the Hunters who came before you, exploring the nightmare realm they created.
